How to choose lamps

Set the height by where your eye sits. For a reading lamp beside a chair, the bottom of the shade should be at about eye level when seated — roughly 40 to 42 inches from the floor — so the bulb never shines directly into your eyes.

Match the light to the task. A desk lamp wants a directional head and 4000K neutral white; a bedside lamp wants a diffused shade and 2700K warm white. The same lamp rarely does both well.

For a mirror or vanity light, prioritise colour rendering over brightness. CRI 90 and above is what makes makeup and skin tones read correctly, and it is the one place in a house where the specification genuinely matters.

Lighting a whole room from a single corner lamp. Two modest lamps at opposite ends produce a far better-lit room than one bright one, at about the same running cost.
